Alumna Gets Ready for a Four-Month Stint in Space

This Monday, August 24, Nicole Stott ('87, DB) is scheduled to become the sixth female astronaut to spend a prolonged period of time in space, as she joins the seven-passenger crew aboard Discovery to the International Space Station (ISS) during STS-128. In addition to walking in space, she'll release and collect materials for various scientific experiments, as well as help assemble the COLBERT treadmill.

After 13 days, the space shuttle will return home but Stott will not be on board. Instead, she will remain on the ISS for four months as an Expedition 20 flight engineer - part of the largest international space crew ever. The crew will live in an orbiting laboratory while working to determine how to best use new technologies for long-term missions.
