OctoberWest a Success

Alumni traveled from across the country to attend this year's OctoberWest celebration at Embry-Riddle's Prescott campus. Four fun-filled days allowed for much networking, socializing and reconnecting, with this year's theme being "Lunarcy on Campus." It was no coincidence that there was a full moon on Saturday. Get Ready for Homecoming Weekend in Daytona Beach

Updates to the event schedule
Some minor changes have been made to the event line-up for Homecoming Weekend. Please visit the eaglesNEST at www.ERAUalumni.org/homecomingweekend09 to get the most up-to-date schedule of events.

Special hotel rates for alumni and friends during Homecoming
Several Daytona Beach area hotels are offering special discounted rates and room packages for alumni and friends visiting during Homecoming Weekend, Nov. 4 - 8. Find the complete list of these hotels here.

Get Your Resume to Employers at the Industry/Career Expo
If you are not able to make it to either the Prescott or Daytona Beach Industry/Career Expos, you can still get your resume to employers who will be there. Simply publish your resume to the EXPO resume book(s) in the EagleHire Network that correspond with your degree. To view all resume books, log into EagleHire, mouse over “Documents” and select “Publish a Resume.”

Resumes will be given to employers at each of the events via CD-Rom. The deadline to submit your resume for the Prescott Industry/Career Expo is Saturday, September 26th and for Daytona Beach, the deadline is Thursday, October 29th. Questions? Participate in the Homecoming Golf Tournament

Alumni, faculty, staff and friends are invited to participate in this fun and relaxing annual Embry-Riddle Eagles Open golf tournament. Proceeds from the event will support the Champions of Character Scholarship program, recognizing the "best of the best" of Embry-Riddle's student-athletes.

Alumni, staff and faculty can participate at a discounted rate of $100 per person (savings of $25). The tournament begins on Friday, Nov. 6, at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Lunch will be provided by Jimmy Johns. An Awards Ceremony will be held in the LPGA Clubhouse immediately following the tournament.

University President Visits Alumni

University President Dr. John Johnson visited alumni in Atlanta, Ga. and Phoenix, Ariz. during his 2009 Presidential Tour. Making his first stop at the Delta Air Transport Heritage Museum in Atlanta on September 29, Dr. Johnson met with nearly 100 local alumni. Special guest speaker Steve Gorman, COO of Delta Airlines, addressed attendees. Atlanta Chapter leader Kevin Wisneski was also in attendance, and met several alumni who are interested in getting involved with their local chapter.

The next day, Dr. Johnson met with alumni at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel. A full room of alumni enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and an address by special guest speaker Rob Wilson, President, Business and General Aviation of Honeywell Aerospace. Read more.

Alumni Get Ready to Celebrate International Eagle Day

Embry-Riddle alumni around the world will give back to their local aviation community in celebration of International Eagle Day on Saturday, October 24. Many Alumni Chapters have volunteer projects planned for this year's International Eagle Day. RSVP to join them here, or help organize an event in your area to benefit your local community.

Special feature: A pictorial history of Embry-Riddle's groundbreaking presence in São Paulo in the 1940s.

In 1941, Embry-Riddle contracted with the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) and the U.S. State Department to create a new section in its Technical School in Miami called the Latin American Department. It would provide a dual education program for students from South America and U.S. citizens planning to seek jobs in South America.

On December 31, 1941, the first class of 526 Latin American cadets arrived at Embry-Riddle to receive instructor-mechanic and service-mechanic training. Students were to complete 2,300 hours of training over 16 months. They came from Honduras, El Salvador, Paraguay, Chile, Venezuela, Cuba, Uruguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Argentina, and Brazil.
