All alumni are invited to attend the homecoming activities of their choice. Homecoming will kickoff on a Thursday at both campuses with the popular Industry/Career Expo and eagleNIGHT.

Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Athletics Program Is Now NCAA Member

The NCAA Division II Membership Committee has officially ruled that Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach Campus Athletics program has successfully completed the transition from the NAIA to become a full-fledged member of NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference. The announcement was made on July 17, 2017, by Embry-Riddle President P. Barry Butler at a press conference in the Jim W. ERAU Flight Teams Dominate Women's Air Race Classic
The two teams from the Prescott Campus were No. 1 and No. 2 in the collegiate category, and No. 2 and No. 5 overall—the best finishes in the history of that campus. A team from the Daytona Beach Campus came in No. 7 in the collegiate category and No. 19 overall. More than 100 flyers took part in the 2,600-mile cross-country race that traces its roots back to Amelia Earhart.

Woman-Owned HyCarb Inc. Joins Daytona Beach Campus Research Park's MicaPlex
The newest Tenant Partner in the MicaPlex is a Florida-based small business developing clean energy batteries, fuel cells, and solar panels for the military, aviation, utility, and transportation industries, including motorsports. One of HyCarb's current projects is refining an ultra-lightweight / high-energy density graphene battery. The company expects to create 220 highly skilled professional jobs in the next 10 years.

The U.S. Office of Naval Research has awarded a five-year, $900,000 research grant to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to develop advanced communication, perception and energy systems for unmanned surface vessels (USVs).

Embry-Riddle President Speaks at San Diego Worldwide Campus Commencement
Embry-Riddle President P. Barry Butler addressed 159 new graduates aboard the historic USS Midway Museum on June 9, encouraging them to "Be grateful. Be of service. Be not afraid." The graduating class included 40 active/reserve service members and 77 military veterans. An Industry/Career Expo and an Eagles Gather alumni event were also held.

Prescott Campus Team Assists in Identifying Third Observation of Gravitational Waves
Nine researchers at the Prescott Campus are among the co-authors of a June 1 article in Physical Review Letters that describes the third detection of gravitational waves -- space-time vibrations — resulting from the collision of two black holes. The National Science Foundation has supported Embry-Riddle’s contributions to the project with about $1 million in grants.

Researchers at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Creare LLC have received a Phase II $1 million grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop a highly sophisticated autonomous flight control system to navigate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in unknown dynamic environments, such as crowded urban locations, or in dangerous or hostile situations.

Embry-Riddle Celebrates 1,500 New Graduates
Embry-Riddle's spring commencement week kicked off May 6, 2017, with 1,500 Embry-Riddle students becoming proud Eagle alumni during Daytona Beach, Prescott, and Worldwide campus graduation ceremonies. On May 6, the Worldwide Campus honored 442 new graduates at a ceremony held in Daytona Beach, while the Prescott Campus had a record 327 students graduate, plus 28 Worldwide students. Two days later, the Daytona Beach Campus' commencement ceremony celebrated 703 new graduates on May 8. The Worldwide Campus also hosted several commencement ceremonies overseas later in the month.

Prescott Campus Golden Eagles Win 11th National Championship
The Prescott Campus Golden Eagles Flight Team captured its 11th national championship title and the Daytona Beach Campus placed sixth against 27 of the nation’s top colleges with aviation programs at the 2017 National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) competition, held May 9-14, 2017, in Ohio.

After years of research and licensing patents, Embry-Riddle Worldwide student Reamonn Soto’s startup business is winning recognition and gaining credibility at Embry-Riddle and at the state level. Soto won first place and $10,000 at the Embry-Riddle Launch Your Venture Competition on April 18, and first-place recognition at the Florida Venture Forum’s Statewide Collegiate Business Plan Competition in Orlando on May 19.

Five Volusia County, Fla.-based startup companies will receive seed funding, mentorship and entrepreneurial support as part of a joint effort by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Research Park and Central Florida nonprofit FireSpring Fund. The selected companies specialize in everything from how best to measure gas-turbine stability, drone data processing and communications to medical safety devices and spacecraft transportation.

After four years at the top of the Airline Quality Rating, Virgin America slipped to third in 2016.  Alaska Airlines, which acquired Virgin America in December 2016, finished No. 1, and Delta Air Lines came in at a close second, according to the 27th annual Airline Quality Rating (AQR), released April 10, 2017, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Students Join Project PoSSUM to Test Prototype Spacesuits in Zero-G
Two Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University students joined the Project PoSSUM suborbital research program team in fall 2016 to evaluate a prototype commercial spacesuit in microgravity, as part of the PoSSUM Bioastronautics Program. The tests were designed to evaluate a prototype seat along with the spacesuit/seat interface through a series of three microgravity flights conducted at the National Research Council in Ottawa, Ontario.

Embry-Riddle UAS Program Leads Nation As One of First to Begin Flight Operations
The long-awaited Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) rule known as Part 107 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) went into effect Aug. 29, 2016. Almost immediately, students and faculty from the Aeronautical Science department at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Daytona Beach Campus became some of the first remote UAS pilots in the nation to begin flying, opening new doors for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Science (UASS) program.

Prescott Campus Enters Virtual Reality with New Simulation Science, Games, Animation Degree
The Embry-Riddle Prescott Campus will begin offering a new Bachelor of Science in Simulation Science, Games and Animation degree, starting in fall 2017. A new specialized lab facility will be dedicated to this technical, multidisciplinary degree, in which students can expect to design and build virtual worlds using applied mathematics and technologies such as computer-aided design (CAD) systems, aviation simulators, animation software and video.

College students from across the globe now have access to an International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT) University certificate program in aviation finance and leasing via web-based distance learning. The one-year, six-credit-hour program consists of three courses designed by College of Business faculty at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus in partnership with ISTAT industry practitioners, taught by Embry-Riddle faculty, and delivered online by Embry-Riddle’s Worldwide Campus.

The future of research at Embry-Riddle advanced to the next level  when the university announced Aug. 2, 2016, that seven Central Florida companies and organizations signed on as partners with the university and will be tenants in the John Mica Engineering and Aerospace Innovation Complex, also known as the MicaPlex.

Prescott Men’s Golf Team Brings Home Second National Academic Championship
For the second straight season, the Prescott Campus men’s golf team earned the top honor in the Golf Coaches Association of America’s Academic National Championship for posting the highest overall team GPA out of 210 teams. With a team GPA of 3.787, the team also won the NAIA conference title for the third time.

Project PoSSUM Graduates 13 Scientist-Astronaut Candidates Who Trained at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach Campus
Project PoSSUM, a non-profit research program devoted to the study of Earth’s upper atmosphere, has graduated 13 new Scientist-Astronaut candidates as part of PoSSUM Class 1601.The PoSSUM Scientist-Astronaut program, designed by former NASA astronaut instructors and hosted by Embry-Riddle's Daytona Beach Campus, gives its candidates the skills to effectively conduct research on commercial space vehicles as part of an international research campaign dedicated to the study of our global climate.
